So you want an easy way to measure your Facebook page’s engagement and to track your success?
You’ve found it!
And this method is both easy and quick. You will save time, know what’s happening at a glance, and most of all, be awesome.
There is really no point is combing over stat after stat, graph over graph (unless you like to) when your time could be spent more productively on actually writing content that attracts and engages your fans and customers.
What You Need
You only really need two stats, and Facebook supplies them to you right there on your page – you don’t even need to click through to Facebook’s Insights.
The two stats that you need are: Page Likes and Talking About This.
Once you have these two numbers, it’s a simple matter of using the following formula:
Talking About This / Page Likes * 100
(That’s Talking About This divided by Page Likes, and then multiplied by 100)
This score is what I call your Engagement%, and is a percentage score, which represents the number of people talking about your page in relation to the number of fans you have.
The higher the number, the better.
Talking About This
“Talking About This” simply shows the number of people who like your page, posts to your page, likes, comments or shares one of your posts, answers a question, responds to an event, mentions your page, tags your page in a photo, checks in at your place or recommends your place.
Why Is the Engagement% Score Good?
- Shows you at a glance how much engagement you are getting
- Over time, this single stat can show you how you are tracking
- It’s simple
- You can spend your time on more important tasks (like running your business)
Once you have this score you need to track it.
Facebook updates this score every day and it is based on the last 7 days of activity. The time they update it varies, depending on where you live, but here in Australia it is sometime in the early afternoon.
I do this calculation every day at around the same time and then use Google Spreadsheets to track it over time. But you could use Excel, or even a piece of paper really.
You don’t need to record it every day however. But the more you do record it, the better overall image of your page’s engagement you will get.
I will take my own page, Baked Social Media, as an example. At the time of writing I have 180 page likes and 34 talking about this. Therefore my Engagement% is 19.4%. Not bad.
My page’s average over the last 2 weeks has been 26%. And over the last 2 months 13%.
So, What’s a Good Engagement%?
Anything above 10% is good. Although, I have noticed the more fans you get, the lower your Engagement% becomes.
I have a client who achieves an average of 5% and they are happy with that as they have a good little community, which is growing over time.
Things to Remember
This score is best used when you have grown your Facebook page organically. If you have bought likes from people who have very little engagement with your page, then your score is always going to be low.
What This Score Doesn’t Show
Because of the nature of the Talking About This metric that Facebook uses, the Engagement% doesn’t show whether you have a couple of very active fans or quite a few who are engaging occasionally.
In other words, it doesn’t show you how many individuals are engaging with you, just how often your page is engaged with.
But all that is okay as over the long term if your engagement is growing then your doing the right thing.
