I can hear the screams of “I told you so” from CEOs all over the world – this social media thing is a crock! If GM is pulling its ads from Facebook because they don’t work then what’s the point?
Well, they are not dropping Facebook ads because the ads don’t work, they are dropping Facebook ads because they don’t know how to make them work.
In my experience, Facebook ads do work. But it does come down to how you use them and what for.
From my talks with a few people there are still a few bugs in the system, especially around geo-targeting, but overall it is a great way to target those people who you want to reach.
Why GM Failed
I’m not surprised GM have pulled out of the Facebook ads – big business still don’t quite get or know how to use social networks effectively. Which is why big business hate small businesses.
You don’t need to look much further than how much they have spent: $40 million! ($10 million on the ads themselves and $30 million to ad agencies).
No wonder they cannot get ROI.
Just given the fact they spent this much in the first place shows that they treated their FB strategy more like it was television and not social media.
And what comes as even more of a surprise is that their Facebook page is getting some nice engagement. Why not spend the $30 million you are paying to the ad agencies and spend that getting even more organic engagement?
What do you think? Are Facebook ads working for you?
